What I wish someone had told me when I started wearing makeup

My make up skills are completely self taught. My mom, grandmother and sisters don’t wear makeup, so I didn’t have anyone to teach me about make up so I had to learn a lot for myself.

Because this blog is primarily aimed at beginners (of all ages) I thought It might be helpful make a post to help those of you who are teaching yourself the art of make up! I try to make all my posts very beginner friendly, so I wanted to throw out a few extra tips for you.

Less is more. this may be over used in every aspect of life.. but it’s true. When I was figuring out eyeliner I disregarded this rule completely and went with “more is more” black eyeliner against sun deprived white skin was… interesting. Maybe I was trying to go for the vampire look…

Not every color will compliment your skin tone. And that’s okay! You could do the exact same look on two people and it would look completely different. Diversity is what makes the world go around. If your best friend’s favorite lipstick doesn’t look as good on you as it does on her, forget about it! Find anther shade that you love and looks fabulous on you!

don’t get crazy. When I was learning makeup, there were not so many learning resources on the subject. I’m not sure if that’s better or worse. Just starting out with videos like Kim Kardashians make up look is over whelming. Start small and natural looking. Get the hang of how make up works before you go for a complicated look.

Blend. I’m not sure I realized how important blending was when I was learning. I know now that it’s the ONLY way to achieve the look you want. Nobody wants harsh lines anywhere.

You get what you pay for. I started wearing makeup young, I thought the drugstore was where you buy make up. I wish someone had told me about the world outside of drugstore makeup and educated me on it. When it comes to make up, of course there are exceptions! but the more expensive makeup, is generally a higher quality.

Your skin type and undertones. When I first started wearing make up there were no blogs or youtube channels dedicated to makeup. (or at least they weren’t popular.) So I’m sure all of you know about undertones and skin types now, but in case you don’t… It’s extremely helpful to know what your skin types and undertones are.

Start with a great skincare routine. I know.. How many times can I mention a great skincare routine on my blog? I’m sure this won’t be the last either.. It’s SO important to perfect your skincare routine before trying perfect your make up routine. Take care of that skin!

Always experiment. Even if you’re pretty sure you’re not going to like the outcome.. You may end up loving it! Try a bold color on your lips, apply false lashes! You may love it. Always experiment to find your beauty loves.

Keep your hands away from your face. If it wasn’t for my cosmetology teachers, I may never have learned anything like this. Don’t tug at your eyes when applying your make up! To be honest, I still do this when I’m doing a winged liner. It’ll be so sad if my awesome liner now causes me to be a wrinkly mess later in life.

Don’t share your make up. I’m not even going to lie… I still do this.. With my sisters or my best friend, they forgot their eyeliner.. no problem! I’ve seen girls let other girls that they don’t even know share their make up. This is just asking for an eye infection.. Don’t do it!

Don’t feel like you have to wear make up every day. Or even at all for that matter. I know that when you start wearing make up regularly, you feel like people will judge you if you decide to go a day or two without it. Don’t worry about them! Wear what makes you happy, when it makes you happy. Your make up is for you! not for everyone else. Make yourself feel beautiful.

I know that everyone in the make up wearing world has tips for those of you just starting. I try to aim my focus on you guys, but am willing to help anyone.

If anyone else has any other tips, please leave them in the comments section!!

Thank you all so much for reading! Have a fabulous weekend! Be safe 🙂
